Philosophy Lesson 18
Mill
Also a utilitarian
Mill thought that the quality of happiness was left out. Some happiness is better than others.
Happiness
Hard to assess
Hard to predict
Too demanding
There is no “justice” in utilitarianism
Justice is not taken into account. It focuses solely on happiness.
Kant
Sought to define Duty-Defined morality
Where, however, other than God could you find these morally defined moralities?
Categorical Imperative
“Act only on that maxim (principle) by which you can at the same time, wish that it become a universal law.”
Shall I cheat in class? Apply principle above
I do cheat and it becomes a universal law. It becomes universally acceptable.
You take something that you are thinking of doing and you apply the theory and see if it beneficial to you in the end.
